Love Blossoms in St. Kitts

It’s easy to fall in love on an island as sweet as St. Kitts. Sitting pretty in the eastern Caribbean, love blooms year round courtesy of spectacular sunsets, starlit nights, views from Mt. Liamuiga standing proud at 3,792 feet above sea level and enchanting beaches made for sultry strolls.

Affectionately dubbed Sugar City, the nickname is also the islands history in a nutshell. Named ‘St. Christopher’ by Columbus in 1493 after the patron saint of travelers, the island later changed to the familiar St. Kitts and became England’s wealthiest sugar colony.  Sweethearts can still ride the Sugar Train and with an upper open–air observation deck that puts you high above the sugar cane fields, vistas are worth a million memories.

Caribbean canoodling is de rigueur in the Rawlins Plantation Inn where the old windmill is a cottage for honeymooners. Through December 18th, the three-night ‘Paradise for Two’ package includes a host of romantic amenities including spa treatments for the bride guaranteed to get rid of any last minute jitters, marriage license, expert advice from the Inn’s wedding coordinator, rose petals scattered on the aisle leading up to the altar, two witnesses if you forget to bring them with you, dinner en suite and wedding cake pour deux. And to keep the newlyweds mojo in high gear, dreamy turn-down service includes flowers on the bed, chilled bottle of bubbly and to seal the deal, chocolate-dipped fresh fruit. “We do one or two weddings a month even in a slow economy, “says Karen Bennett, marketing manager.” Romance is our favorite pastime and it’s always our pleasure to create fairy-tale weddings at our Inn.”

Also wooing the smitten, Spice Mill Restaurant is rolling out a romantic red carpet. ”We love hosting weddings on our beach,” says Roger Brisbane , owner, “we work with the couple to make sure everything goes smoothly from the ceremony to the cake “  Fronting picturesque Cockleshell Beach, comfy beds are planted in the sand for cuddling as the sun sets over the calm Caribbean Sea.  Visit www.spicemillrestaurant.com.

With love in the air, it’s no surprise the hotels, restaurants and spas have launched ‘The Fall in Love with St. Kitts” program that dishes up a bevy of free nights  and  reduced airfares when hotel packages are booked via AA Vacations, Delta Vacations or US Airways Vacations.  Visit www.stkittstourism.kn.

American Airlines flies non-stop from Miami and New York (JFK) and US Airways from Charlotte and Delta from Atlanta.

Tying the Knot in St. Kitts

Getting married in St. Kitts is a breeze with red tape kept to a minimum.

  • No residency is required.
  • Couples can obtain a marriage license when they arrive with a valid passport or photo ID and   the original or certified copy of birth certificates.
  • If you have never been married before, an affidavit confirming single status is required.
  • If divorced, a decree absolute (an original or certified copy showing a court stamp or seal) must be presented.
  • A legal ceremony can be held at your hotel, in a church of any denomination, amongst historic ruins, in a rustic gazebo, picturesque garden and, of course, on the beach

We spent my honeymoon at Rawlins in St. Kitts and both my wife and myself enjoyed seeing it this column. We had exactly the same impression when we were there in 2009. I look forward to reading other columns because we are now planning a second honeymoon somewhere in the Caribbean and we need suggestions.

    Thank you,

For more romance in a private villa with a 42 foot pool and tropical landscaping, try Beach Music Villa. The view from every room in the villa, of the golf course, the ocean, Nevis, and the Pennisula, is among the most magnificent on the island.

Your very romantic reports on those Caribbean islands make me want to dash away on a honeymoon right now! Too bad I don’t have the necessary other half to take along. Keep those great lovebird tours coming.
