Romantic Guide to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Activities and Attractions

While Puerto Rico may be an island, it is packed with more activities and attractions than most small countries. If you and your honey are thrill-seekers or history buffs; hikers or foodies, the island is overflowing with unforgettable experiences.

Old San Juan

You'll probably land in San Juan, the capital. Definitely make time for exploring Old San Juan, a colonial city built in the 16th century, steeped in living history. An absolute must see is Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, more commonly called El Morro. This sprawling 16th century fort provides wonderful seaside and city views from its walls. After you've seen the sights, there are plenty of options for dining in some of the island's best restaurants, or browsing boutiques for that one-of-a-kind souvenir.

Rum Tour

A change of pace is a tour of the Bacardi Rum Distillery, located across the bay from San Juan in Cata'o. It's a fascinating look at the history and present day techniques of making rum, with a special rum tasting at the end of the tour.

If Old San Juan whetted your appetite for history, then head down to the south coast of the island, to visit the city of Ponce, where the atmosphere will transport you back to the 19th century. Ponce has none of the flash of San Juan ' instead it's a place to reconnect with days gone by. Art lovers will want to drop into the Museo de Arte de Ponce, said to have the finest collection of art in the Caribbean.

El Yunque

Puerto Rico is also awash in natural attractions that make perfect daytrips. One of the most appealing is El Yunque, a tropical rainforest to the east of San Juan where it seems there's a waterfall everywhere you look. You can tour El Yunque on foot or by car, enjoying the tropical flowers, numerous birds and serene atmosphere.

Rio Camuy Caves

The Rio Camuy Caves system to the west of San Juan is the third largest in the world. A tram descends to the mouth of the Clara Cave, where you can then explore the cave terrain via a footpath and join a guided tour to view stalactites and stalagmites. Those couples in search of action will find it easy to find. Surfers head to Rincon, where the best breaks are found. If you're looking for thrills, there are numerous operators providing ziplining adventures through tropical forests. Watersports also abound, with numerous options for scuba diving, snorkeling and sailing.
