Celebrity Honeymoons

by Rowena Carr-Allinson

Celebrities, millionaires, tycoons…. Love them or hate them, they live the ultra glamorous lifestyle many of us have always dreamed of. Enjoying the best of everything is their prerogative so the ultimate stamp of approval for a honeymoon destination is ‘star attraction’.

Where do those who can go where they want to, choose to escape to? Where do the J-Los of this world escape to for some time out?

Tahiti, French Polynesia, South Pacific

Why go? Tahiti is an idyllic destination that has been a honeymoon hotspot forever. The blue lagoon-ringed islets are the very incarnation of paradise on earth. What’s not to love?

Where to stay? Follow in Nicole Kidman’s footsteps and stay at the St. Regis Bora Bora. Aside from gorgeous over-water villas with in-suite Jacuzzi, private swimming pool and 24-hour butler, there’s the glorious view stretching over the water forever.

What to do? Dive off your villa into the turquoise seas, and while he tries fly fishing in the private Lagoonarium you can go in for some indulgence at the Miri Miri Spa for heavenly smelling monoi-based Polynesian treatments. Invest in some time in cheeky siestas or venture out of the resort for pearl shopping in Viatape, horse riding or jet skiing. Opt for the honeymoon package and get a Polynesian canoe breakfast too.

The Maldives, Indian Ocean

Why go? A classic honeymoon location, the dreamy islands were even TomKat’s choice for their honeymoon. Admittedly they borrowed a friend’s yacht but checking into a luxurious hotel is just as good.

Where to stay? Head to Baros, set on its own private island and surrounded by a pristine turquoise lagoon. The villas that are either over the water, or nestled amongst the coconut frangipani are all about discreet luxury. Even the LCD screens are hidden in beautifully upholstered trunks!

What to do? Go diving or snorkelling around the reef, or to the nearby shipwreck where you might see anything from turtles to tropical clown fish or even sharks! Chill out in the lighthouse lounge or catch the sunset at the restaurant which has heavenly 360 degree views of the neighbouring islands. The honeymoon package also includes a candlelit dinner and souvenir photos.

Remember to check your calendar before you book! The Southwest monsoon from May to October brings wet and rainy weather to the paradise islands…

St. Barts, French West Indies

Why go? The tiny 8 square mile Caribbean island has always been a celebrity magnet, and the best reason to visit St Barts is that there isn’t one! There is nothing to do on the island apart from relax and enjoy the 22 fantastic beaches and 100 odd restaurants. And it works: everyone from Uma Thurman to Kirsten Dunst escape to its beaches for some slow living.

Where to stay? The Guanahani Hotel is Kate Moss’s hideout of choice and it’s easy to see why. Its gorgeous beach and gingerbread style pastel cottages have a true cosy Caribbean feel. And, because St Barts is in the French West Indies the hotel’s Indigo restaurant has a mouth watering menu. Mind the Planteur cocktails, the rum punch is lethal and comes in huge goldfish bowls! Book the honeymoon package and get grilled lobster lunch, spa treatments, cooking classes, a cruise, picnics and even car rental all included.

What to do? Explore the volcanic island in the soft top white Jimny Jeep (the island’s most popular mode of transport), or spend lazy days at the Anse de Grande Saline beach. For a bit of a thrill, try jet skiing, windsurfing, parasailing or a day’s yachting.

Santa Barbara

Why go? Just a stone’s throw away from Los Angeles, it’s so much more relaxed that celebrities flock to Santa Barbara, nicknamed ‘the Riviera of the West coast.’ It was even the wedding and honeymoon destination of choice for some very big names including Julia Roberts, JLo and JFK!

Where to stay? Rub shoulders with the A list at the Four Seasons Biltmore in Montecito. The elegant resort is all about elegance and romance. Orchids abound, fireplaces glow and four-poster beds create the perfect setting. And, the cool pool even has private cabanas equipped with plasma screens…

What to do? Visit the sophisticated boutiques, the pier, marina and take in the city’s rich Spanish and Indian heritage. Try fishing, hiking, surfing or simply eating and drinking: the back country beyond the San Marcos Pass is home to booming wine country best known for its delicious Chardonnays.
