5 Steps to Picking Your Perfect Honeymoon Hotel

Once you've selected your destination, the next step is to choose your resort. If you are particular about your resort, you may need to pick your hotel before your destination or you might end up switching locations a couple of times. Play around with it and keep your options open. Many destinations are similar - white sandy beaches or mountain skiing - but your hotel will make all the difference. You will be spending a lot of time at the hotel or in your room, so do the research.

Choose the location of your hotel.

Do you want it on the beach? In the heart of the city? Secluded mountain escape? This will narrow down your selection quiet a bit. Tip: If money is a concern for a beach honeymoon, pick a hotel that isn't on the beach, which is usually less expensive and you will still be close enough to spend all day lounging on the same beautiful beach that people pay 3 times as much to stay on!

How much can you spend?

Figure this out before plunging in. You will find plenty of perfect resorts with the price tag to match. Look at our budget worksheet to help estimate your expenses. Figure out how many nights you will stay and how much you can spend per night on the hotel. Our database bases the prices on nightly cost per couple to make it easier for you to search for hotels that match your budget. If you choose an all-inclusive resort, you can cut the food expense out and increase your hotel rate to even it out.

What type of hotel do you want to stay out?

Hotels can vary from couples-only, adult-only, all-inclusive, large resorts, small boutique hotels... Some hotels are primarily focused on children and families, so if you don't want to be surrounded by tons of children, find out what type of clientele the hotel brings in. Also, when reading hotel reviews, pay more attention to those written from honeymooners or couples.

What kind of room or suite do you imagine?

You will be spending quality time in your hotel room, so keep this in mind when picking your hotel. Check out our page on how to book your romantic hotel room for some tips to consider.

Hotel costs usually increase as the number of amenities increases. If you're planning on spending most of your time away from your hotel ~ siteseeing, shopping, excursions... then the number of amenities shouldn't be very important. If you don't want to leave your resort, then the amenities are key! Here is a list of important resort amenities to consider:

  • 24-hour room service
  • Bar
  • Casino
  • Concierge
  • Dive center
  • Fitness center
  • Golf course
  • Hot tub ~ Jacuzzi
  • Live entertainment
  • Night club
  • Pool
  • Restaurant
  • Spa ~ Massage
  • Water sports ~ snorkeling, scuba diving, canoes, jet skis...

Once you've got all these steps set, start hunting for the resort that matches your style. Our search engine lets you search by a lot of these features, so hunt away. When you finally decide on that one hotel that matches your taste, or a few hotels for those who want to hop around, start booking.

Try to book as soon as possible. If you have your heart set on one resort and have done a lot of research to find it, you don't want to be let down by finding out that it is already sold out. A lot of travel agents will book with a deposit, so you won't have to pay all upfront. If you go with an online travel booking site, you will have to pay in full, so keep that in mind.

Booking Tips: Try to call the hotel directly for booking instructions. If you have a travel agent that can do the arrangements, that is best.

Budget Tips: If you have a miles card, see which hotels the airline has partnerships. You might be able to get an amazing upgrade or extra night for free!
